Korean phrases at a gas station in Korea lean on Pattern 01 from the SULSUL workbook — noun plus 주세요 (juseyo), "please give me." Pull up to the pump and say 휘발유 주세요 (hwibaryu juseyo), "Regular gas, please," or 경유 주세요 (gyeongyu juseyo), "Diesel, please." Pattern 03 — 있어요? (isseoyo?), "Is there…?" (selpeu juyugi isseoyo?), "Is there a self-service pump?"

(selpeu juyugi isseoyo?), "Is there a self-service pump?"
  • Fill amount: 만 원만 넣어 주세요 (man wonman neoeo juseyo), "Please put in only ten thousand won."
  • Card works: 카드 돼요? (kadeu dwaeyo?), "Can I use a card?"

How do you ask for the right fuel at a Korean gas station?

Most 주유소 (juyuso, gas station) chains in Korea — SK, GS Caltex, S-OIL — label pumps in Korean and English. If you rent a car, check whether it takes 휘발유 (hwibaryu, gasoline) or 경유 (gyeongyu, diesel) before you pull in.

You: 안녕하세요. — annyeonghaseyo. hwibaryu juseyo. — "Hello. Regular gas, please."
— eolmana neoeulkkayo? — "How much should I put in?"
— man wonman neoeo juseyo. — "Please put in only ten thousand won."

What do you say at a self-service pump?

Many stations are 셀프 (selpeu, self-service). You pay inside first or tap your card at the machine, then fill. Pattern 44 from the workbook — (V)아/어도 돼요? (a/eodo dwaeyo?), "May I…?" — helps when you are unsure about the nozzle.

— selpeu juyugi isseoyo? — "Is there a self-service pump?"
Them: 네, 저쪽이요. — ne, jeojjog-iyo. — "Yes, over there."
You: 카드 돼요? — kadeu dwaeyo? — "Can I use a card?"

If the screen freezes before fuel flows, walk to the counter with 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo), "Please help me." The same 카드 돼요? line from withdrawing cash at an ATM in Korea works when the pump rejects a foreign card.

What usually goes wrong at a Korean gas station?

Travelers often choose 경유 (gyeongyu, diesel) by mistake because the green nozzle looks similar to gasoline in other countries — double-check the rental contract and say 휘발유 맞아요? (hwibaryu majayo?), "This is regular gas, right?" before the attendant starts pumping.

A second mistake is assuming every pump takes a foreign card at the machine. If payment fails twice, go inside and ask (yeogiseo gyeoljehaedo dwaeyo?), "Can I pay here?" so staff can run the card at the counter.

Say it out loud, not just in your head

Reading 휘발유 주세요 on a rental-car checklist is not the same as saying it to an attendant while cars are lining up behind you.
