Korean phrases at an ATM in Korea lean on Pattern 03 from the SULSUL workbook — noun plus 있어요? (isseoyo?), "Is there…?" (hyeongeum inchulgi isseoyo?), "Is there a cash machine?" inside a bank branch or at a convenience store counter when the screen is in Korean only. Pattern 15 — 얼마 (eolma, how much) — covers limits: 얼마나 뽑을 수 있어요? (eolmana ppobeul su isseoyo?), "How much can I withdraw?"

(hyeongeum inchulgi isseoyo?), "Is there a cash machine?"
(eolmana ppobeul su isseoyo?), "How much can I withdraw?"
  • Ask for help: 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo), "Please help me."
  • Foreign card works: 외국 카드 돼요? (oeguk kadeu dwaeyo?), "Do foreign cards work?"
  • Need a receipt: 영수증 나와요? (yeongsujeung nawayo?), "Does a receipt come out?"

How do you find an ATM that accepts your card?

Many 은행 (eunhaeng, bank) ATMs sit just inside the glass doors, while 편의점 (pyeonuijeom, convenience store) machines often run 24 hours. If the screen freezes, staff at the counter can reset it — start with a quick 있어요? (isseoyo?) question before you wander the block.

— jeogiyo, hyeongeum inchulgi isseoyo? — "Excuse me, is there a cash machine?"
Them: 안쪽에 있어요. — anjjoge isseoyo. — "It is inside."
You: 외국 카드 돼요? — oeguk kadeu dwaeyo? — "Do foreign cards work?"

Situation Say this
Is there an ATM? (hyeongeum inchulgi isseoyo?)
(eolmana ppobeul su isseoyo?)
Foreign card OK? (oeguk kadeu dwaeyo?)
Need help 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo)
Receipt prints? (yeongsujeung nawayo?)

What do you say when the machine stops mid-transaction?

Listen for 한도 (hando, limit) and 잔액 (janag, balance). If the amount is too high, the screen may flash an error without English.

— eolmana ppobeul su isseoyo? — "How much can I withdraw?"
— harue baegman won kkajiyo. — "Up to one million won per day."
You: 알겠습니다. — algesseumnida. gamsahamnida. — "Understood. Thank you."

For exchanging bills before you deposit cash, the same 얼마예요? (eolmayeyo?) line from exchanging currency at a bank in Korea works at the teller window next to the machines.

What usually goes wrong at a Korean ATM?

Travelers often pick 통장 (tongjang, bankbook) services on the menu when they only need 현금 (hyeongeum, cash) — look for the cash icon or ask 현금만 뽑을게요 (hyeongeumman ppobeulgeyo), "I only want to withdraw cash."

A second mistake is walking away before the card ejects. Wait until the machine beeps and says 카드 받으세요 (kadeu badeuseyo), "Please take your card." If the card stays inside, 카드가 안 나와요 (kadeuga an nawayo), "The card is not coming out," gets staff moving fast.

Say it out loud, not just in your head

Reading 현금 인출기 있어요? on your phone is not the same as saying it to a bank guard while the lobby is about to close.
