By nine at night the walking street in Hongdae has three or four 버스킹 (beoseuking), busking, circles going at once — a vocal duo, a guitar, and at least one cover crew dancing the choreography from this month's comeback. The circle is open, the speaker is loud, and the crew talks to the crowd between songs. Two lines get you in: 신청곡 받아요? (sincheonggok badayo?), "Do you take song requests?" and 영상 올려도 돼요? (yeongsang ollyeodo dwaeyo?), "Is it okay if I post the video?"

  • Request a song: 신청곡 받아요? (sincheonggok badayo?), "Do you take song requests?"
  • Check before posting: 영상 올려도 돼요? (yeongsang ollyeodo dwaeyo?), "Is it okay if I post the video?"
  • Ask what is coming: 다음 곡 뭐예요? (daeum gok mwoyeyo?), "What's the next song?"
  • Ask about the next show: 다음 공연 언제예요? (daeum gongyeon eonjeyeyo?), "When is your next show?"
  • Follow the crew: 계정 알려 주실 수 있어요? (gyejeong allyeo jusil su isseoyo?), "Could you tell me your account?"

A riverside park in Seoul at sunset, another spot where buskers set up

How do you join a busking circle instead of watching from behind?

Nobody sells tickets and nobody assigns you a spot, so the whole thing runs on small talk in the gaps between songs.

  1. 다음 곡 뭐예요? asked to the fan standing next to you, which is how you find out whether the crew is about to do the song you flew in for.
  2. 신청곡 받아요? shouted at the crew during the break, since most take requests and a few keep a list on a phone by the speaker.
  3. 영상 올려도 돼요? before you post, because filming is expected but crews care about where the clip ends up.
  4. 다음 공연 언제예요? near the end, when the crew is packing the speaker and finally has a second to answer.
  5. 계정 알려 주실 수 있어요? last, which is how you find the same crew again next weekend.

What do Korean speakers say back?

Everything is said over a backing track, so the answers are three or four words long and often just a hand signal with a sentence attached.

You: 신청곡 받아요? — sincheonggok badayo? — "Do you take song requests?"
Them: 네, 이 곡 끝나고 받을게요. 뭐 듣고 싶어요? — ne, i gok kkeunnago badeulgeyo. mwo deutgo sipeoyo? — "Yes, I'll take one after this song. What do you want to hear?"
You: 영상 올려도 돼요? — yeongsang ollyeodo dwaeyo? — "Is it okay if I post the video?"
Them: 그럼요, 계정만 태그해 주세요 — geureomyo, gyejeongman taegeuhae juseyo — "Of course, just tag our account."
You: 다음 공연 언제예요? — daeum gongyeon eonjeyeyo? — "When is your next show?"
Them: 토요일 여덟 시에 여기서 해요 — toyoil yeodeol sie yeogiseo haeyo — "Saturday at eight, right here."

When the last song ends the crowd shouts 앵콜 (aengkol), encore, and the crew usually does one more. Joining that shout is the easiest Korean you will say all night. For the version where the crowd is the performance, see Korean phrases for a random play dance in Hongdae.

What usually goes wrong at a busking stage?

The common one is filming first and asking later. Crews expect phones and most of them want the clips, but 영상 올려도 돼요? is the difference between a clip they share and a clip that surprises them — and the answer usually comes with the account name you needed anyway.

The other is waiting for a break that never gets quiet enough. Songs run back to back and the crew packs up fast, so 다음 공연 언제예요? and 계정 알려 주실 수 있어요? are asked while someone is coiling a cable, not during a pause. Say them early rather than perfectly. If watching the choreography makes you want to try it, see Korean phrases for a K-pop dance class in Seoul.

Say it out loud, not just in your head

Every line here is said into a speaker at full volume, to someone who is out of breath and about to start the next song.

SULSUL is a speaking gym for exactly that moment: pick a survival pattern, say it out loud, get an instant fix from the AI pronunciation coach, then run the real situation as a mission. The 100-pattern PDF workbook comes along as a bonus.
