What to Say When Ordering Coffee in Korean

To order coffee in Korean, name the drink and add 주세요 (juseyo), "please give me." 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요 (amerikano han jan juseyo) means "One Americano, please." Answer temperature, size, and for-here/to-go with one short phrase each.
- Name the drink and add 주세요 — 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요 (amerikano han jan juseyo), "One Americano, please."
- Answer temperature with 아이스로 주세요 (aiseuro juseyo), "Iced, please," or 따뜻한 걸로 주세요 (ttatteuthan geollo juseyo), "Hot, please."
- Say 가지고 갈게요 (gajigo galgeyo) for "to go," or 먹고 갈게요 (meokgo galgeyo) for "for here."
- If you don't understand, say 다시 말씀해 주세요 (dasi malsseumhae juseyo), "Please say that again."

How do you place the first order?
The reusable pattern is drink name + 한 잔 주세요 (han jan juseyo). 한 잔 (han jan) is the counter for one cup, so 라테 주세요 (rate juseyo) works too — the counter just makes the quantity explicit.
If the menu name is unfamiliar, point and say 이거 주세요 (igeo juseyo), "This one, please." Unsure what to try? Ask 뭐가 맛있어요? (mwoga masisseoyo?), "What is good here?" A barista would not normally ask what drink you want again after you've already named one — listen for the next question instead.

How does the exchange usually go at the counter?
Baristas ask about temperature or size right after you order, not before.
You: 아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요. — aiseu amerikano han jan juseyo. — "One iced Americano, please."
Them: 어떤 사이즈로 드릴까요? — eotteon saijeuro deurilkkayo? — "Which size would you like?"
You: 작은 사이즈로 주세요. — jageun saijeuro juseyo. — "A small size, please."
드릴까요? (deurilkkayo?) politely asks what the barista should prepare for you. Answer with the option plus 으로 주세요 (euro juseyo) or 로 주세요 (ro juseyo), "please make it that way" — you never need a full new sentence.

What do you say for here or to go?
The barista may ask 드시고 가세요, 가지고 가세요? (deusigo gaseyo, gajigo gaseyo?), "For here or to go?" Answer with one clear phrase.
| Answer | Phrase |
|---|---|
| Staying | 먹고 갈게요 (meokgo galgeyo) |
| Leaving | 가지고 갈게요 (gajigo galgeyo) |
| Also "to go" | 테이크아웃 할게요 (teikeuaut halgeyo) |
| Extra shot | 샷 추가해 주세요 (syat chugahae juseyo) |
| Pay by card | 카드로 할게요 (kadeuro halgeyo) |
A common mistake is answering the size question before the temperature question has even been asked — wait for each question and answer only what's asked, one word at a time.

How do you customize a drink without a complicated sentence?
Ask first, then request the change. 두유로 바꿀 수 있어요? (duyuro bakkul su isseoyo?) means "Can you change it to soy milk?" If they say yes, follow with 두유로 바꿔 주세요 (duyuro bakkwo juseyo).
For an allergy, ask 우유가 들어가요? (uyuga deureogayo?), "Does it contain milk?" so staff can check the recipe instead of guessing.
Say it out loud, not just in your head
Reading 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요 here is not the same as saying it while the barista is already looking at you, waiting for your order.
