Gimbap travels better than almost anything else in Korea, which is why it ends up in hiking bags, on trains, and in a foil wrapper eaten standing up. It is also counted in a unit most learners have never used: 줄 (jul), a roll. 김밥 한 줄 주세요 (gimbap han jul juseyo), "One roll of gimbap, please," is the whole order at a small shop, and 포장이요 (pojangiyo), "To go," is the word that decides whether it comes on a plate or in a bag.

  • Order one: 김밥 한 줄 주세요 (gimbap han jul juseyo), "One roll of gimbap, please."
  • Take it away: 포장이요 (pojangiyo), "To go."
  • Stay and eat: 여기서 먹을게요 (yeogiseo meogeulgeyo), "I'll eat here."
  • Leave something out: 오이 빼 주세요 (oi ppae juseyo), "Please leave out the cucumber."
  • Check the wait: 얼마나 걸려요? (eolmana geollyeoyo?), "How long will it take?"

How do you order gimbap in ten seconds?

Gimbap shops are built for speed — the rolls are cut while you stand there, and the questions come at you in short bursts.

  1. 김밥 한 줄 주세요 to open, since the counter is where you say both the item and the number.
  2. 포장이요 or 여기서 먹을게요 immediately after, because it changes what the staff reach for.
  3. 오이 빼 주세요 if something inside is a problem for you — cucumber, carrot, and pickled radish are the usual swaps.
  4. 얼마나 걸려요? when there is a queue and you are deciding whether to wait or walk.
  5. Say 감사합니다 (gamsahamnida) at the bag, which is all the closing anyone expects.

What do Korean speakers say back?

Staff answer in two or three words and hand you a question back, usually about which kind.

You: 김밥 한 줄 주세요 — gimbap han jul juseyo — "One roll of gimbap, please."
Them: 어떤 걸로 드릴까요? 참치김밥도 있어요 — eotteon geollo deurilkkayo? chamchigimbapdo isseoyo — "Which one? We have tuna gimbap too."
You: 포장이요 — pojangiyo — "To go."
Them: 금방 돼요 — geumbang dwaeyo — "It'll be ready in a moment."
You: 얼마나 걸려요? — eolmana geollyeoyo? — "How long will it take?"
Them: 따로 담아 드릴까요? — ttaro dama deurilkkayo? — "Shall I pack them separately?"

If you want more than one, the counter changes: 두 줄 (du jul), two rolls, 세 줄 (se jul), three. For the rest of the takeout vocabulary, see Korean phrases for ordering takeout food in Korea.

What usually goes wrong at a gimbap counter?

The first one is the counter word. Learners ask for 김밥 하나 and it is usually understood, but 한 줄 is what the shop says back, so the number in the reply lands as noise. Hearing 몇 줄 드릴까요? (myeot jul deurilkkayo?), "How many rolls?" and answering with 한 줄 keeps the exchange in one language.

The second is treating 오이 빼 주세요 as an allergy sentence. It removes one ingredient from one roll; it does not cover sesame oil, egg, or fish cake already mixed into the filling. If something is a real medical problem rather than a preference, use the wording in Korean phrases for food allergies and diet restrictions.

Say it out loud, not just in your head

This whole order takes less time than reading it did, and the staff ask their question while your hand is still reaching for the counter.
