Korean Phrases for KakaoTalk Texting

Korean phrases for KakaoTalk texting are shorter and faster than spoken Korean. Send 지금 가는 길이에요 (jigeum ganeun girieyo), "I am on my way," when a friend asks where you are. Reply 잠시만요 (jamsimanyo), "One moment," when you need thirty seconds before answering. Those two lines cover half the chats you will have in Korea.
- Say you are coming: 지금 가는 길이에요 (jigeum ganeun girieyo), "I am on my way."
- Ask them to wait: 잠시만요 (jamsimanyo), "One moment."
- Confirm you arrived: 도착했어요 (dochakhaesseoyo), "I have arrived."
- Say you are running late: 조금 늦을 것 같아요 (jogeum neujeul geot gatayo), "I think I will be a little late."

How do you tell someone you are on your way?
KakaoTalk runs on quick status updates. 지금 (jigeum, now) + 가는 길이에요 (ganeun girieyo, on the way there) is the standard "OMW" message. If you are heading toward the person, use 오는 길이에요 (oneun girieyo), "I am on my way to you."
You: 벌써 출발했어요? — beolsseo chulbalhaesseoyo? — "Did you already leave?"
Them: 응, 지금 가는 길이에요. — eung, jigeum ganeun girieyo. — "Yeah, I am on my way."
You: 알겠어요. 천천히 오세요. — algessoyo. cheoncheonhi oseyo. — "Got it. Take your time."
When you arrive, send 도착했어요 (dochakhaesseoyo) so they stop wondering. One word change, zero awkward "Are you here yet?" loops.

What do you text when you are late or confused?
Running late is normal; saying nothing is what frustrates people. 조금 늦을 것 같아요 (jogeum neujeul geot gatayo) sets expectations without a long apology.
| Situation | Text this |
|---|---|
| Running late | 조금 늦을 것 같아요 (jogeum neujeul geot gatayo) |
| Need a minute | 잠시만요 (jamsimanyo) |
| Cannot make it | 오늘 못 가요 (oneul mot gayo) |
| Ask to reschedule | 다른 시간 괜찮아요? (dareun sigan gwaenchanayo?) |
| Say thanks after meeting | 오늘 재밌었어요 (oneul jaebisseoyo) |
If someone sends a voice note you cannot follow, 천천히 말해 주세요 (cheoncheonhi malhae juseyo), "Please say it slowly," works even in text.
How do you react and keep the chat warm?
Short reactions carry a lot of weight. 그래요? (geuraeyo?, "Really?") shows you read the message. 다행이에요 (dahaengieyo), "That is a relief," fits when someone says they found their wallet or finished a test.
You: 시험 끝났어요! — siheom kkeunnasseoyo! — "The exam is over!"
Them: 와, 다행이에요! 수고하셨어요. — wa, dahaengieyo! sugohasyeosseoyo. — "Wow, that is a relief! Good job."
You: 감사합니다. 저녁에 시간 있어요? — gamsahamnida. jeonyeoge sigan isseoyo? — "Thank you. Do you have time this evening?"

Why texting Korean is worth practicing out loud
The same patterns — 지금 가는 길이에요, 조금 늦을 것 같아요 — show up in voice messages and face-to-face too. For openers before you exchange numbers, see Korean small talk phrases.
Say it out loud, not just in your head
Reading 도착했어요 in a chat preview is not the same as saying it clearly when your friend calls to ask if you are at the meeting spot.
SULSUL is a speaking gym for exactly that moment: pick a survival pattern, say it out loud, get an instant fix from the AI pronunciation coach, then run the real situation as a mission. The 100-pattern PDF workbook comes along as a bonus.
