To exchange contact info with a Korean friend, open with 카카오톡 있어요? (KakaoTok isseoyo?), "Are you on KakaoTalk?" If yes, ask 카카오톡 ID 알려 주세요 (KakaoTok ID allyeo juseyo), "Please tell me your KakaoTalk ID." Pattern 15 in the SULSUL workbook — 전화번호가 뭐예요? (jeonhwabeonhoga mwoyeyo?) — works when someone prefers a phone number instead.

  • Check for KakaoTalk: 카카오톡 있어요? (KakaoTok isseoyo?), "Are you on KakaoTalk?"
  • Ask for their ID: 카카오톡 ID 알려 주세요 (KakaoTok ID allyeo juseyo), "Please tell me your KakaoTalk ID."
  • Ask for a phone number: 전화번호가 뭐예요? (jeonhwabeonhoga mwoyeyo?), "What is your phone number?"
  • Offer yours first: 제 번호 적어 주세요 (je beonho jeogeo juseyo), "Please write down my number."

How do you ask without making it awkward?

Koreans rarely exchange bare phone numbers on a first meeting unless you already clicked. The KakaoTalk opener from the blockquote above is the standard move — it signals you want to stay in touch without sounding too formal. If they say yes, open KakaoTalk, tap Add Friend, and say ID 알려 주세요 (ID allyeo juseyo), "Please tell me your ID."

When someone asks your name first, answer and bounce back with Pattern 16: 저는 미국 사람이에요. 지민 씨는요? (jeoneun miguk saramieyo. Jimin ssineunyo?), "I am American. How about you, Jimin?" Swap in your country and their name. That keeps the conversation moving toward contact info naturally.

What does the exchange sound like in real life?

You: 카카오톡 있어요? — KakaoTok isseoyo? — "Are you on KakaoTalk?"
Them: 네, 있어요! — ne, isseoyo! — "Yes, I am!"
You: ID 알려 주시겠어요? — ID allyeo jusigesseoyo? — "Could you tell me your ID?"

If they prefer a phone number, they might say 번호 알려 드릴게요 (beonho allyeo deurilgeyo), "I will give you my number." Have your phone ready — asking 천천히 말해 주세요 (cheoncheonhi malhae juseyo), "Please speak slowly," is fine when you are typing digits.

Step Say this
Open the ask 카카오톡 있어요? (KakaoTok isseoyo?)
Get their ID 카카오톡 ID 알려 주세요 (KakaoTok ID allyeo juseyo)
Ask phone instead 전화번호가 뭐예요? (jeonhwabeonhoga mwoyeyo?)
Confirm you saved it 저장했어요 (jeojanghaesseoyo)
Follow up later 연락할게요 (yeollakhalgeyo)

A cozy bedroom at night, set up for texting a friend in Korean

What usually goes wrong?

The most common mistake is waiting until you are already walking away. Ask while you are still standing together — phones out, KakaoTalk open, ready to tap Add Friend.

A second slip is mixing up 알려 주세요 (allyeo juseyo), "please tell me," with 적어 주세요 (jeogeo juseyo), "please write it down." If your Korean is still slow, offer your phone and say 여기에 써 주세요 (yeogie sseo juseyo), "Please write it here." Survival Mission 7 in the SULSUL workbook walks through this full role-play. For what to text after you connect, see Korean small talk phrases for total beginners.

Say it out loud, not just in your head

Reading the KakaoTalk opener on a screen is not the same as saying it when a new friend is already reaching for their phone.

SULSUL is a speaking gym for exactly that moment: pick a survival pattern, say it out loud, get an instant fix from the AI pronunciation coach, then run the real situation as a mission. The 100-pattern PDF workbook comes along as a bonus.
